چکیده

This chapter presents the concept of decentralized spatial computing (DeSC) as a way to embed dynamic spatial data capture and processing capabilities within our built urban environment. The chapter illustrates the potential of DeSC for safeguarding privacy in a dynamic location-based services scenario: Mobile service users protect their potentially sensitive location by the use of a decentralized query algorithms, solely collaborating with peers close by and thereby excluding the privacy bottleneck of an omniscient global service provider. In an extensive set of consecutive experiments several decentralized query algorithms were tested, trading the level of privacy for the quality of service. The use of a real world test bed, — a small part of Ordnance Survey's OS MasterMap® Integrated Transport NetworkTM Layer for Southampton — underlines the experiments' validity. The chapter concludes with a research and development agenda for DeSC in the urban context. 1203 Multi - Policy Optimization in Decentralized Autonomic Systems ( Extended

This paper addresses the challenge of multi-policy optimization in decentralized autonomic systems. We evaluate several multi-policy reinforcement learning-based optimization techniques in an urban traffic control simulation, a canonical example of a decentralized autonomic system. Our results indicate that W-learning, which learns separately for each policy and then selects between nominated a...

Changing Regional Spatial Structure of the Population and Activity The Case of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran

Functional and structural changes of regional system are ongoing spatial changes that form patterns of spatial organization, depending on dominant regional forces and factors. Spatial structure of West Azerbaijan province experienced significant changes during 15 years; thus, the present research aim to investigate the manner of spatial distribution of two variables of population and activity, ...

Commonsense Spatial Reasoning about Heterogeneous Events in Urban Computing

In this paper we discuss the adoption of a formal approach to correlation of heterogeneous information based on qualitative spatial reasoning to contribute to some relevant aspects that stream reasoning need to face in Urban Computing. The approach is based on the adoption of Commonsense Spatial Hybrid Logics to reason about events and infer higher-level scenarios of interest. This paper theref...

Noise pollution and its spatial distribution in urban environments (case study: Yazd city, Iran)

This study focuses on identifying source and frequency of noise pollution in Yazd, Iran. For data collection, we used two approaches: First we selected 55 monitoring stations for 122 km grid network; the distance between two stations was 2 km. Then, at the same time, we measured the sound pressure level (SPL) at main roads; the distance between two monitoring stations in this case was 1 km. Aft...

Urban Areas with Decentralized Employment: Theory and Empirical Work

This chapter discusses theoretical and applied research in urban economics on decentralized cities, i.e., cities in which employment is not restricted to the central business district. The first section discusses informally the incentives that firms face to suburbanize. The next section summarizes the theoretical literature on decentralized cities, including both models which solve for the opti...
